AbeBooks is an online marketplace where thousands of independent booksellers list their stock: new, second-hand, rare and out-of-print books, plus art, maps, comics and other collectables. It started in Canada in 1996 and has been part of Amazon since 2008. The UK site prices everything in pounds and includes plenty of British sellers.

It suits anyone hunting for a particular book: a cheap used copy of a set text, a long-out-of-print title from your childhood, or a special gift such as a signed copy or a first edition. Students can search by ISBN for textbooks, and collectors can filter rare books by date, price, dust jacket or signature.

What's worth a look

Because every listing is a single seller's copy, these are the sections and guides we'd start with.

The Seller Sales page lists booksellers taking part in this month's sale, grouped by discount from 10% to 40% off, with prices already reduced. It includes UK shops such as Washburn Books in Pateley Bridge, and you can search within the sale.

For gifts, the first editions section explains what makes a true first edition and links to searches, while 100 years of Winnie-the-Pooh marks the bear's centenary this October with rare editions and artwork. If you're clearing shelves, Book Buyback gives instant quotes through partner companies.

The rare books area is worth a browse even if you are not a serious collector. It covers antiquarian and leather-bound books, signed and inscribed copies, fine press editions and illustrated books, with a search that lets you set a price range in pounds. At the other end of the scale, the textbooks section lets you search by ISBN, author or title, and points you to cheaper international editions. Featured seller catalogues, such as Folio Society editions and children's illustrated books, are a good way to browse when you don't have a title in mind.

Current offers

Our AbeBooks page has the monthly seller sales and used textbooks with free shipping. On AbeBooks.co.uk right now:

  • The current Seller Sales event runs until 28 October, with participating sellers offering 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% or 40% off.
  • Book Buyback gives every book you sell a free, trackable shipping label.

How to save more

  • Add up the postage. Each seller sets its own delivery charge, so the cheapest book isn't always the cheapest total.
  • Buy several titles from one seller to keep postage down, especially for children's book sets or series.
  • Consider older or international editions of textbooks. The textbooks section points out that older editions are usually the cheapest, but check with your course first.

Products, prices and offers checked on the store's own website on 10 Oct 2026. Prices and stock can change.
