ReduceMyExcess: standalone car and van hire excess cover explained

ReduceMyExcess sells single-trip and annual car hire excess cover for UK residents, as an alternative to the waiver offered at the rental desk.

ReduceMyExcess sells one thing: excess insurance for hire cars and vans. Brothers Jon and Mark Rebuck started it in 2011 after running into confusing excess charges while renting cars abroad. The business trades under Eversure Limited in Guildford, which is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and AIG underwrites the policies.

Here's how it works. Most hire agreements leave you liable for an excess if the car is damaged. The site notes this can be £1,500 or more. The rental desk will usually offer its own waiver to cut that to zero. A ReduceMyExcess policy is bought separately before you travel. If you're charged the excess, you pay the hire company and then claim the money back from ReduceMyExcess. It suits anyone who hires a car on holiday or in the UK, but it's for UK residents only.

Every policy includes up to 8 additional named drivers. It also covers tyres, windscreen and undercarriage, plus misfuelling, towing, lost keys and personal possessions, with up to £10,000 of excess reimbursement in total. Read the policy documents to check it fits your trip.

To claim, you complete a form within 90 days of being charged by the rental company. You send it with your certificate, your rental agreement, the damage report and invoice, and a copy of the driver's licence. Policies are sold online only, with no call centre, and you manage them through MyAccount. There you can download documents and change renewal settings. If you live in the EU, the sister brand Cover4Rentals is the one to use.

What's worth a look

The two policies with prices on the ReduceMyExcess site today.

The single trip policy covers one trip, including back-to-back hires, and UK hires are included as standard. The annual policy is meant for people who hire more than once a year. UK cover is an optional add-on with the annual policy.

Current offers

  • We don't have any ReduceMyExcess codes at the moment.
  • Single trip car hire cover is advertised from £2.15 a day and van hire cover from £2.87 a day. These are representative prices, and your quote depends on your trip.
  • Annual policies that renew without a claim get a renewal discount.

How to save more

  • Before you go, check the excess on your hire agreement and what the desk's own cover leaves out. Glass, tyres and the underside of the car are common exclusions.
  • Renting in the USA or Canada? Collision damage waiver often isn't included in the hire price there. The CDW page explains the optional add-on for Worldwide policies.
  • Keep your rental agreement, damage report and invoices. You'll need them for a claim, which must be made within 90 days of being charged.
