Travis Perkins: builders' merchant for trade and DIY projects

Travis Perkins is the builders' merchant many tradespeople know from the yard down the road. Part of Travis Perkins plc, it describes itself as the UK's largest supplier of building materials, with more than 500 branches, a tool hire service and Benchmarx Kitchens showrooms. The website and the TP App let you order the same range online, from timber, plasterboard and insulation to paint, sealants, power tools and garden supplies.

It's built around trade accounts, but you don't need one to shop. Homeowners doing a garden project, a loft or a bit of decorating can buy at the online retail price and either collect from a branch or have it delivered. Trade customers can open a cash or credit account for personalised trade pricing.

Beyond materials, branches offer tool and equipment hire, an estimating service that works out the materials and labour for a job, and Benchmarx Kitchens showrooms. Many branches open from 7am, which helps if you want to collect before starting work.

For autumn jobs, Cuprinol Ducksback is a familiar choice for sheds and fences, and the Knauf loft roll is the kind of bulky item where free delivery on bigger orders really helps. Smaller essentials such as a tube of CT1 sealant are handy for topping up an order to reach the free delivery threshold.
