ClevGuard makes parental control software for families who want to see what's happening on a child's phone or computer. Its main app, KidsGuard Pro, shows messages, call logs, location, browsing history and app use in an online dashboard, and lets parents set geofences, app limits and website blocks. The company is Cleverguard Technology Co., Limited, with offices in Hong Kong and London. Prices are in US dollars, and every plan is a subscription that renews automatically until you cancel it in the product settings.

It suits parents of younger children and teens who want more detail than the free controls built into Android and iOS. Some of the site's blog content goes beyond family use, so it's worth being clear: in the UK, monitoring someone else's device without their permission is against the law. Use it on a device you own and your child uses, and talk to them about it. Older teenagers in particular tend to respond better to agreed rules than to an app running in the background.

For most families the choice is between KidsGuard Pro, which has the fullest feature set, and KidsGuard for Children, a lighter screen-time and content tool that costs much less. MoniVisor covers Windows and Mac computers, and the anti-spyware app checks your own phone for hidden monitoring tools. There are also single-app monitors for WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat and LINE at similar prices to the TikTok one, so if one app is the worry, one of these may be all you need.

• Check the device and system requirements first. The refund policy backs a 30-day money-back guarantee, but it rules out refunds for incompatible devices or a change of mind.
• If you only need it for a short spell, set a reminder to cancel the auto-renewal in the product settings. The quarterly plans sit in between, at $75.99 for three months of KidsGuard Pro.
