Contact Lens King is an American online shop that has been selling brand-name replacement contact lenses since 2004. It's run from Las Vegas by Contact Lens King Inc., and the pitch is simple: the same boxed lenses your optician supplies, from Acuvue, Alcon, CooperVision and Bausch + Lomb, sold online at lower prices. It's mainly set up for US customers, but it does post overseas, so it's worth a look if you already wear one of the big national brands and like to compare prices.

Before you get excited about the numbers, a word on how it works from the UK. Prices are in US dollars (or Canadian dollars if you switch currency), international orders go by International Priority Packet for a flat $44.95 and take five to ten business days, and you may have to pay import VAT or customs charges when the parcel lands. You'll also need your prescription details to hand, as you enter the brand, power, base curve and diameter when you order.

What's worth a look

The catalogue runs to more than a hundred lens lines, covering daily, two-weekly and monthly disposables, toric lenses for astigmatism, multifocals and coloured lenses. These six are among its best sellers:

Daily wearers will find the 90-packs the easiest to compare, such as Dailies AquaComfort Plus 90 Pack at $63.95 a box. If you wear monthlies, Biofinity comes in a six-lens box at $44.95, and there are toric and multifocal versions too. Each product page shows the lenses per box and an estimated time to ship, as less common prescriptions may have to be ordered in from the manufacturer.

The shop also sells its own line of Octane ready-made reading glasses, which it says are only available at Contact Lens King.

Current offers

  • Buy More Save More: selected lenses carry a discount symbol and get cheaper per box when you buy more.
  • Refer a friend: you get $10 store credit each time someone you refer places an order, with no cap on how much you can build up (it can't be used on lenses sold at the manufacturers' minimum prices).
  • Newsletter: sign up at the bottom of any page to hear about new brands, sales and promotions.

Some lenses are sold at the price the manufacturer sets, and the site says no further discount applies to those, even with a coupon.

How to save more

  • Shipping to the UK is charged per order, not per box, so one larger order works out cheaper than several small ones. Our tip: check a 90-pack price against two 30-packs.
  • Work out the full cost in pounds, including the $44.95 delivery, your card's foreign transaction fee and any import VAT, before comparing it with a UK seller.
  • Look for the Buy More Save More symbol on your lens and see what the price per box becomes at higher quantities.
