LivTours runs guided tours, food experiences and day trips in Italy, Spain, France, England, Austria and Germany. It started in Rome in 2009, founded by a local guide, and now lists more than 350 experiences. What makes it different is group size. Its semi-private tours take a maximum of six people, so you're not stuck at the back of a crowd of 25 listening through a headset. If you'd like to see the Vatican or the Uffizi with a proper guide but without the coach-party feel, it's worth a look.

The site runs in euros by default, but you can switch it to pounds at the top of the page. Prices include entry tickets, plus any transport or tastings the tour description mentions. Every semi-private tour also has a private version for up to 15 people, which suits families and groups who want to choose their own start time.

What's worth a look

Here are six semi-private tours across LivTours' main cities, with the per-person prices shown in pounds on the site today:

If you've only got a morning in Rome, the Colosseum Express Tour is a one-hour visit with reserved entry, and at £82.04 it's one of the cheaper ways into the arena with a guide. Families heading to Florence might prefer the gelato making class: it's an hour at a family-run gelato academy where you can make your own flavour, and it's hands-on enough to keep children interested. You don't have to leave the UK, either. The London range includes a Westminster walk timed for the Changing of the Guard, British Museum and Tate Modern tours, and private trips to Windsor, Bath and Stonehenge.

Current offers

We don't have any LivTours discount codes at the moment, and there's no sale running on the site. There are still a few useful perks. Children under 3 travel free, though they may need adding to the booking so they get a free ticket. If you book the refundable option and cancel more than 24 hours before the start, you can take a full refund or travel credit worth 110% of what you paid, and that credit doesn't expire. Gift vouchers can be redeemed any time within three years.

How to save more

  • Switch the currency to GBP before you compare prices. The site defaults to euros, and seeing pounds makes it easier to compare against other tours.
  • Go for the express tours if time or budget is tight. The one-hour Colosseum, St Mark's Basilica and Louvre options cost less than the longer tours of the same sites.
  • If plans might change, pick the refundable option and book more than 24 hours ahead. If you then can't go, the 110% travel credit is worth more than a straight refund.
