ProHoster is an international web hosting company that says it has been running since 2012 and has more than 40,000 customers in over 120 countries. The site footer names the operator as IT WEB LTD, registered in the British Virgin Islands, with operations in Meppel in the Netherlands. The main site is in Russian, but there's an English version, and prices are in US dollars.

It suits people who run their own websites or small projects and want cheap, no-frills hosting: bloggers, developers, small online shops and anyone who needs a virtual server for a few dollars a month. Most VPS plans sit in the Netherlands, and dedicated servers are offered in a long list of European and US cities.

Beyond hosting and servers, ProHoster sells domain registration in more than 700 zones, paid SSL certificates, DDoS protection, IP address rental and server administration. Shared hosting supports one-click installs of WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and OpenCart, and you can choose a separate PHP version for each site, from 7.4 up to 8.5. Support runs around the clock by ticket and email, and the company promises 99.9% uptime under its service level agreement. Payment is by card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or cryptocurrency.

What's worth a look

Here are six of its plans and services, from the cheapest shared hosting up to dedicated hardware.

The Unlim-1 cPanel shared hosting plan at $2.50 a month is the entry point, with 30GB of space, up to 10 websites, free Let's Encrypt SSL and DDoS protection, and a free website builder. If you need root access, the Linux VPS range starts with the VPS-512-1-SSD at $2.60 a month, while the Windows-capable KVM range starts at $4.60. Dedicated servers start at about $63 a month for an older Intel Core i3 machine in Estonia, rising to $65 for quad-core Xeon boxes in Romania, Czechia, Ukraine and Bulgaria.

Current offers

• 50% off virtual (shared) hosting with code HOST_AD.
• 50% off the VPN service with code VPN_AD.
• A 14-day free trial of web hosting, advertised on the homepage.

How to save more

• Start with the free 14-day hosting trial to check speed from the UK before you pay.
• On a VPS, compare the half-price first month with paying for a year up front for 15% off, and pick whichever fits how long you'll need the server.
• Ask for the free website transfer if you're moving from another host, and read the refund terms first: only hosting and VPS that don't match their stated specs are refundable.
