World of Tanks is Wargaming's free-to-play online tank battle game, first released in 2010. Teams of players fight it out in vehicles from the First World War to the Cold War, with more than 800 tanks to research. UK players join the European server at worldoftanks.eu. It suits anyone who likes team shooters with a slower, more tactical pace, and you can play for years without spending a penny.

The shop sells Premium tanks, bundles, gold, Premium Account time and subscriptions. Most purchases are optional shortcuts to speed up your progress or to get cosmetic styles.

What's worth a look

If you play most days, WoT Plus is the subscription to look at: Core costs $8.99 a month, and there's a free trial so you can see if the bonuses suit how you play. The Premium Account is the other big one, adding 50% to credits and experience after every battle.

The German Reunification event is running now, with up to 50% off German vehicles and garage slots. Best Buy bundles such as the Rheinmetall Skorpion G come in a new "EIN Berlin" style for 16,760 gold instead of 23,950. Away from the screen, World of Tanks: The Card Game has just added Wave 4, a 114-card expansion from Archon Studio.

October is busy in the game itself. The DOOM Battle Pass special adds DOOM characters as crew members and an FV225 with a "Mk. BFG" 3D style. The Neon Dash arcade mode returns for the weekend of 9-11 October, and the yearly Halloween event brings back the Mirny-13 story with a new vehicle, the Eclipse. You can earn many of these event rewards just by playing.

If you're new, start with the newcomer's guide on the site. It explains vehicle types, the in-game economy and how research works, before you think about spending anything.
