2ndNumber gives you an extra phone number that lives in the cloud rather than on a SIM card. You can pick a UK mobile or landline number, a US or Canadian number, or a Belgian, Dutch or Spanish one, then use it through the 2ndNumber app on Android or iPhone, from a web dashboard, or by diverting calls to your normal mobile. According to its terms, the service is run by Intervoice Technology SL.

It suits sole traders and small businesses who don't want to hand out a personal mobile number, people who want a separate number for a second WhatsApp account, and anyone who'd rather keep their main number off sign-up forms. There's no contract, and receiving calls and texts is free.

A UK number costs £3.15 a month or £37.19 a year, and you can choose an 01, 02 or 07 number. Each plan includes 100 credits a month, and one credit buys a minute of calling or a text to the UK, US or Canada. If you want a local number, there are area code pages for places such as London (020), Manchester (0161) and Edinburgh (0131). UK landline numbers can't receive texts, so pick an 07 mobile number if you need SMS, for example for verification codes.

The business tools are where it goes beyond a basic second-line app. You can type out a voice menu ("press one for sales") and have it read in your choice of voice and accent, share an SMS inbox with colleagues, and set up a ChatGPT-based WhatsApp chatbot for your website that passes on enquiries by email and text.

Getting started takes three steps: choose your number and sign up, log in to the web dashboard with the details 2ndNumber emails you and set up call forwarding, then optionally install the app to make internet calls from your smartphone without a SIM. Calls to the UK and US cost one credit a minute, and calls to places such as India, Mexico or Colombia cost two credits a minute, with extra credit packs available from your account if you run out.

Current offers

• Our code GIVEME20 gives 20% off yearly virtual phone numbers.
• The UK number setup fee is shown as £2.05, down from £7, and the US setup fee as $2.05, down from $7.

How to save more

• Use GIVEME20 on a yearly plan: the UK yearly price of £37.19 is already a little cheaper than 12 months at £3.15.
