Alibaba.com is the wholesale side of Alibaba Group, the Chinese company that also runs AliExpress. It started in Hangzhou in 1999 as a place for businesses to find manufacturers, and that's still what it does: thousands of factories, wholesalers and exporters, mostly in China, list their products, and you buy from them directly. Prices show in pounds for UK visitors, but they're per unit and most listings come with a minimum order quantity.

That makes it a good fit for small businesses, market traders, clubs, schools and makers who want stock, merchandise or packaging in bulk. If you just want one hoodie for yourself, AliExpress or a high street shop will suit you better.

Custom clothing is one of the site's strengths. The heavyweight hoodie with embossed or embroidered logo starts at £7.84 a piece with a minimum order of just two, which makes it handy for testing a design before ordering for a whole team. If you're kitting out a club or a small brand, the mock-neck sweatshirt at £12.54 and the oversized bomber jacket at £14.03 need 50 and 20 pieces respectively. Accessories are cheaper still: jacquard logo socks start at £1.21 a pair and gold-plated huggie earrings at around 57p a pair, both sold in multiples.

Beyond clothes, the catalogue covers furniture, lighting, home appliances, packaging and printing, pet supplies, vehicle parts, machinery and raw materials. There's also a Ready to Ship section for stock that suppliers can send straight away, and an EU Picks section for products that come with EU compliance support.

Current offers

Alibaba.com doesn't run sitewide voucher codes. What it does have:

• Saving Spotlight: a selection of products listed at over 80% below typical retail price.
• Bulk discounts: the Ready to Ship section promotes extra discounts when you order by the case.
• New-customer discounts: some supplier stores offer exclusive discounts to buyers who haven't ordered from them before.
• Gold Buyer discounts: further reductions on selected listings for buyers at Gold Buyer level and above.
• Free quotes: post a Request for Quotation and matching suppliers send you prices.

How to save more

• Always pay through Alibaba.com so your order is covered by Trade Assurance. It refunds you if the order isn't shipped or arrives missing, defective, incorrect or damaged, and offers compensation if delivery is late.
• Use a Request for Quotation to compare several suppliers on price, minimum order and delivery time before committing to one.
• Work out the full landed cost. Unit prices don't include shipping, which varies by supplier and location, and UK import VAT and duty may be added on top.
