AliExpress: a giant marketplace with pound-shop prices and free Choice shipping

AliExpress is the global online marketplace run by Alibaba Group from Hangzhou in China. Rather than one shop, it's a platform where thousands of independent sellers, many of them manufacturers and wholesalers, list their goods. That means an enormous range, from phone cables and tools to homeware, clothes, craft supplies and car accessories, often at prices well below the high street.

UK shoppers see prices in pounds, and the easiest part of the site to use is the Choice range, which comes with free shipping and, AliExpress says, free returns within 90 days. Because every listing comes from a different seller, it suits bargain hunters who don't mind reading the small print and waiting a little longer for some deliveries.

It's at its best for the small, fiddly things that cost far more in a DIY shop or a supermarket's homeware aisle: spare cables, storage bits, tool sets, hobby and craft supplies, phone cases and replacement parts. Many listings offer multi-packs or bulk quantities, which is useful if you run a club, a classroom or a small craft business. For bigger purchases it's worth slowing down, comparing a few sellers and reading the full product description, including the delivery estimate shown before checkout.

What's worth a look

Six everyday bits from the SuperDeals strip on the AliExpress homepage, with the prices shown when we looked.

The cheapest finds tend to be the small, useful things. The telescoping magnetic grabber is handy for fishing dropped screws out from behind the washing machine, and a pack of nylon cable ties or a roll of double-sided nano tape costs about the same as a coffee. Prices on SuperDeals change daily and can depend on whether you're a new customer, so treat them as a guide.

Current offers

Our AliExpress page has two UK codes from the Party Ready Sale: £41 off a £330 spend and £31 off a £260 spend. On the site itself right now:

• Bundle for Less offers three items from £0.90 for new shoppers.
• Free shipping on all Choice items.
• SuperDeals on the homepage, with many everyday items cut by more than half.

How to save more

• Look for the Choice label. It brings free shipping and simpler returns, which takes a lot of the risk out of a cheap order.
• Check the seller's rating, how many orders the item has had and the delivery estimate before you pay. Prices can look similar while quality varies a lot.
• Combine items to reach a code's minimum spend rather than placing lots of small orders, and check that the code's threshold applies to your basket total in pounds.
