ARTdiscount is a UK online art shop with a long back story: it grew out of Granthams, a Blackpool sign-making firm dating from 1890, launched its website in 2001 and now trades as part of Jackson's Art Supplies. It stocks the brands most painters and illustrators know, including Winsor & Newton, Daler-Rowney, Liquitex, Strathmore, Gamblin and Faber-Castell, along with HIMI's colourful gouache and watercolour sets. It suits students topping up a kit list, hobby painters trying a new medium and anyone who wants a decent set as a gift.

Many lines show a crossed-out price next to the current one, and delivery is free on UK mainland orders over £50.

Watercolour painters have a lot of choice. The Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour sets of six 5ml tubes come in themed palettes, from Urban Sketching to Floral and Rich Earth, and are each £28.80 at the moment, down from £41.80. If you prefer pans, the Daler-Rowney Aquafine 12 half pans metal box set is £40.80 against a crossed-out £45.95, and it's a tidy option for painting outdoors.

For something brighter, HIMI's jelly cup gouache comes in a 56-colour case for £51.00, which is a lot of colour for illustration or design work. Oil painters can start with Gamblin's set of six mediums, which includes Gamsol, Gamvar gloss varnish and cold wax, so you can experiment with flow and finish without buying each bottle separately.

Drawing and sketching are well covered too. The Strathmore 400 Series toned tan sketchbook (£26.60, crossed-out £29.50) is a hardback with mid-tone paper that works with both dark and light media, so white pencil and charcoal both stand out. Daler-Rowney's warm selection of eight soft pastels is £15.00, a low-cost way to try pastels before committing to a bigger set.
