Amazon.co.uk has been selling to UK shoppers since 1998, when it started out with books. Today it covers almost everything a household buys, from groceries and pet food to laptops, toys, garden tools and fashion, with a large slice of the range coming from independent Marketplace sellers. It suits anyone who wants lots of choice in one place, and it's especially handy if you shop often enough to make a Prime membership pay for itself.

Because Amazon prices change constantly, the best way to save here isn't hunting for one product. It's knowing which of Amazon's own programmes and bargain sections to use, and when.

What's worth a look

These are the Amazon pages and schemes we'd check first before buying anything.

Amazon Prime is the big one. It brings unlimited One-Day Delivery on eligible items, Prime Video, member-only deals and early access to Lightning Deals, and it's £8.99 a month or £95 a year after a 30-day free trial. If you're a student or aged 18 to 24, the Prime for Students and 18-24 year-olds plan is half the price, at £4.49 a month or £47.49 a year.

For bargains, Amazon Resale (the old Warehouse section) sells like-new returns and quality used items, and the Amazon Outlet gathers discounted overstock across categories such as electronics, home, toys and grocery. Today's Deals changes every day and is where Lightning Deals and seasonal events such as Prime Day show up.

Current offers

  • Prime free trial: new members get 30 days of Prime free, then it renews at £8.99 a month unless you cancel.
  • Students and 18-24s: new members can currently get a six-month trial (sponsored by Microsoft Surface), then pay half the usual Prime price.
  • Free delivery on books: orders that include £10 or more of eligible books dispatched by Amazon get free standard delivery in three to five working days.
  • Subscribe & Save: repeat deliveries of eligible items come with a discount and free standard delivery.
  • Trade-In: send in an old Amazon device, even a broken one, for a gift card plus up to 20% off a new qualifying Amazon device. Postage is free.

How to save more

  • Check who's selling. Items sold and dispatched by Amazon count towards free delivery and follow Amazon's 30-day returns policy. Marketplace sellers may charge their own delivery.
  • Look at Resale before buying new. The same item is often listed as a used or like-new return on the product page, so open the "other sellers" options before you check out.
  • Bundle your Subscribe & Save items. Lining up several subscriptions for the same delivery day keeps everything in one parcel, and you can cancel any of them whenever you like. Changing a delivery date can affect the discount, so check before you move it.
