Autumn and May is an independent jeweller in the historic Greenwich Market in south-east London, a short walk from the Cutty Sark and the Meridian Line. It has been trading since 1993 and stocks contemporary designer jewellery alongside engagement rings, wedding bands and a full workshop service. It's a good fit if you want a thoughtful gift from a well-known British brand, or a ring with proper advice behind it, without the hushed atmosphere of a high-end boutique.

Brands include Kit Heath, Clogau (whose silver pieces carry a touch of rare Welsh gold), Pdpaola, Laura Ashley and Diamonfire, plus handmade pearl rings and Baltic amber pendants. Most everyday silver pieces sit between about £70 and £300. Away from the cabinets, the team handles bespoke commissions, remodelling of old jewellery, repairs, engraving and insurance valuations by registered valuers.

What's worth a look

Six pieces from the Autumn and May site, with today's prices.

For an easy gift, the Kit Heath Love Silver Heart Stud Earrings are £75, just tipping the order over the free-delivery threshold. The Kit Heath Coast June Birthstone Moonstone Tag Necklace (£115) is part of a birthstone range, so it's worth checking for other months too.

If you like Welsh gold, the Clogau Tree of Life Sterling Silver Vine Topaz Ring costs £99, with rose gold leaf detail and white topaz. And for something a little different, the Chasee Ballet Baltic Cognac Amber Marquise Drop Pendant (£199) sets warm amber in sterling silver.

Every order arrives gift-boxed, fully tracked and insured, in plain outer packaging with no branding, which is handy if the parcel is a surprise. Some pieces are made to order or can be engraved; those take a little longer, and the product page shows the expected lead time.
