Fiverr is an online marketplace where freelancers sell services rather than products. It was founded in Tel Aviv in 2010 by Micha Kaufman and Shai Wininger, and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2019. The name comes from its early days, when every job cost $5. Prices now vary widely, but the idea is the same: freelancers list fixed-price services, called gigs, and you order them much as you would order something from a shop.

What you can get done

Most people think of Fiverr as a tool for small businesses, and plenty of sole traders use it for logos, websites and social media posts. It's just as handy for personal one-off jobs, though:

• a CV or LinkedIn profile rewrite before a job hunt
• wedding invitations, birthday cards or a family tree design
• restoring or colourising old family photos
• editing a holiday video or making a slideshow for a big birthday
• translating a document, or proofreading a personal statement
• a voiceover or a short personalised video message

How buying works

Most gigs come in three packages, usually called basic, standard and premium, which differ in what's included, how quickly it's delivered and how many rounds of changes you get. You pay when you order, and Fiverr holds the money until the work is delivered. A service fee is added at checkout on top of the gig price, so check the total before you pay. For bigger projects, Fiverr Pro is a separate tier of freelancers whom Fiverr has vetted.

How to get a good result

• Message the seller with your brief before you order, so they can confirm they can do exactly what you need.
• Look at their portfolio and recent reviews for work like yours, not just the overall star rating.
• Check how many revisions are included. Extra rounds can cost more, so a slightly dearer package can be better value.
• Give clear examples of what you like. Freelancers work much faster from a picture than from a description.
