UPDF is a PDF editor made by Superace Software, a company founded in 2021. It works on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android, and one licence covers up to four devices, so you can use the same account on a laptop, tablet and phone. It suits students, freelancers and anyone who regularly fills in forms, signs documents or needs to change a PDF without going back to the original file.

You can edit text, images and links in a PDF, add notes and highlights, fill in and sign forms, merge or reorder pages, password-protect or redact files, and convert PDFs to Word, Excel, PowerPoint or images. OCR turns scanned pages into searchable, editable text. The optional UPDF AI add-on can summarise, translate and explain documents, answer questions about a PDF and turn long files into mind maps.

The main choice is between paying yearly and paying once. UPDF Pro costs £37.99 a year (usually £52.99) or £59.99 for a lifetime licence (usually £74.99), so the lifetime licence costs less than two years of the yearly plan. Students and teachers can get UPDF Pro for £29.99 a year through the education plans, after verifying their status. The AI features are a separate subscription, so skip them if you just need a good PDF editor.

Who it suits

If you only open PDFs to read them, you may not need UPDF at all. It's useful if you regularly edit or convert documents, such as a self-employed worker sending quotes and invoices, a student annotating reading lists and papers, or a household dealing with forms from schools, councils and landlords. Because the same licence works across platforms, you can mark up a document on an iPad and finish it on a Windows laptop. UPDF Sign is a separate online service for sending documents to other people to sign, which landlords and small businesses may find handy.

How to save more

• Download the free version first and try it on your own files before you pay.
• Work out how long you'll use it. If it's more than a couple of years, the lifetime licence is better value than renewing every year.
• If you take a subscription, cancel at least three days before it renews if you don't want the next payment.
