Hero Wars is a fantasy role-playing game in which you build a team of heroes, back them up with titans and pets, and fight your way through bosses, campaigns and battles against other players. It first came out in 2016 and is made by Nexters, a games studio based in Limassol, Cyprus, that's now part of the GDEV group. The browser version, Hero Wars: Dominion Era, runs on hero-wars.com and Facebook, while Hero Wars: Alliance is the version for iPhone and Android.

It suits anyone who likes collecting characters and gradually powering up a team, and because it runs in a browser you don't need to install anything to try it. You can sign up with an email address or a Google or Facebook account.

The heroes are split into roles such as tank, healer, mage, marksman, support, control and warrior, so part of the fun is working out which combinations suit each fight. Titans are larger characters with their own battles, and pets add extra effects in combat. Players can also chat, join guilds and compete on leaderboards, which is worth knowing if younger family members play, as Nexters' parents' guide points out.

What's worth a look

The website has a full character encyclopaedia covering every hero, titan and pet, with skills, artifacts and backstories. These are good places to start:

The cast has included some well-known crossover characters. The Lara Croft page sets out her skills, such as Power of the Tombs and Critical Thinking, and the Ninja Turtles have their own entry too. Crossover heroes have been offered for limited periods, so check in-game to see which characters you can currently summon. Titans such as Hyperion and pets such as Albus have pages of their own as well.

Current offers

How to save more

  • Play for a while before you buy anything: the game is designed to be playable without paying.
  • If a child plays, follow Nexters' parents' guide. It suggests password protection or switching off in-app purchases on the device, and players under 16 need a parent's consent.
  • If you buy something by mistake, contact support quickly. The terms say refunds may be possible within 48 hours if the items haven't been used.
