HopeGoo is the international booking site and app from Tongcheng Travel, one of China's big online travel companies. You can book flights, hotels, Chinese high-speed rail tickets, ferries, attraction tickets and local activities in one place. It covers the rest of the world too, but it's most useful if you're planning a trip to mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan, where many UK booking sites have less to offer.

The site says it works with more than 1,000 cheap routes and over 100 airlines, and it offers round-the-clock customer service. Bookings can be managed through the website or the HopeGoo app, and there's a "Custom Trips" option if you'd like help putting a longer itinerary together. Because it grew out of a Chinese travel company, it's particularly strong on things like domestic rail tickets and local attractions that can be awkward to book from the UK.

Prices show in US dollars by default. You can change the currency at the top of the page, and the amount you pay is converted into the currency you choose. You can pay with the usual cards and PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay, as well as Alipay and WeChat Pay.

The Hong Kong MTR Airport Express e-ticket is a handy buy before you fly. It's a QR-code ticket from Hong Kong, Kowloon or Tsing Yi stations, valid for 30 days from ordering, with free cancellation, and the journey into the city takes as little as 24 minutes. The Hong Kong guide suggests October to March as the best time to visit.

How to save more

• For flights, read the airline's refund rules first. HopeGoo follows them and may deduct a refund fee.
