Meshnology sells kit for Meshtastic and MeshCore, the open-source projects that let small LoRa radios send text messages and GPS positions to each other with no mobile signal at all. You pair a pocket-sized node with your phone over Bluetooth, and each radio in range passes messages on to the next. That makes it handy for walking groups, campsites, festivals, smallholdings and anyone curious about off-grid communication.

It started by turning bare development boards from makers such as Heltec and Seeed into ready-to-use kits with a case, battery and antenna, which saves you hunting for parts. It now designs some hardware of its own too. Prices are in US dollars and UK orders ship from China, so it suits hobbyists who don't mind a wait of a couple of weeks.

What's worth a look

If you're new to all this, the Meshnology N39 is a sensible first node. It's built around Heltec's WiFi LoRa 32 V4 board with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and LoRa, comes in a case with an OLED screen and a 3000mAh battery, and has a connector ready for a GPS add-on. A single set is $49.99, and there are two-set options so you have something to talk to straight away.

If you want location sharing built in, the N37 Wio Tracker L1 adds GPS and a low-power nRF52840 chip for long battery life, at $55.99 for one set. The N37E version swaps the OLED for an e-ink screen that's easy to read in sunshine. To cover a wider area, a fixed relay up high makes the biggest difference: the MeshTower S1 V2 pairs an 18V, 10W solar panel with three 2800mAh batteries so it can sit outdoors on its own.

Tinkerers should look at the W12, Meshnology's own board built on Semtech's LR2021 chip with an ESP32-S3. It's $69.99 and works with both Meshtastic and MeshCore firmware, with the code published on GitHub if you want to customise it.

How to save more

• Check the size option before you add to basket. Several kits default to the "Only Case" version, which is why the N37E's price starts at $12.99.
