Woodestic: handmade crokinole, carrom and shuffleboard from Hungary

Woodestic is a small Hungarian company that makes wooden tabletop games by hand. It built its first crokinole board in 2012, and crokinole is still the heart of the range: a round board where players flick wooden discs towards a hole in the middle while knocking their opponents' discs off. If you've played it at a friend's house and want a board of your own, or you're after a family game that will outlast every plastic box in the cupboard, this is a shop worth knowing about.

These are serious pieces of furniture rather than impulse buys. The boards are hand-finished in steamed beech, cherry or walnut with leather-covered ditches, and each one has a serial number on the back. Woodestic plants a tree for every board it sells through One Tree Planted, and it backs its games with a 30-day trial and what it calls a 97-year guarantee against manufacturing defects.

What's worth a look

For most families the Crokinole Tournament Bronze Set is the natural starting point: it's built to official tournament size with a fast, polished surface, and you choose the wood, the leather colour for the ditch and your disc colours. If space is tight, the Crokinole Travel Set is a scaled-down board you can pack for a holiday cottage or carry to a games night.

The other big boards are worth a look if crokinole isn't your thing. Carrooka mixes snooker, pool and carrom on a round 71cm playing surface, Woodestic Carrom is a modern take on the Indian classic, and the tabletop Shuffleboard brings the pub game down to dining-table size. Sling is the odd one out: a fast two-player game where you use an elastic band to shoot your discs through a gap into your opponent's half, and a round takes about five minutes.
