Virgin Media deals this week: Gig1 broadband from £29.99 and Sky Sports bundles

Gig1 gigabit broadband from £29.99 a month leads Virgin Media's new-customer prices, which are listed until 14 October. Virgin's sale page says new deals are coming soon, so these are the standing deals we think are best value today.

Unless we say otherwise, prices are for new customers on a 24-month minimum term, with no set-up fee if you use the QuickStart self-install kit. Prices depend on your address, and Virgin's monthly prices go up by a fixed £4 each April.

1. Gig1 gigabit broadband from £29.99 a month

Gig1 Fibre Broadband averages 1,130Mbps downloads. It's listed from £29.99 a month for 24 months, then £86 a month. Netflix Standard with Ads is included, and so is Virgin's WiFi guarantee: at least 30Mbps in every room, or £100 credit.

It suits busy households, gamers and anyone working from home who wants the fastest widely available Virgin speed.

Tip: M500 is listed from £27.99 a month and also comes with Netflix. If you don't need gigabit speeds, compare the two at your postcode.

2. M125 broadband from £23.99 a month

Virgin's cheapest standard deal is M125 Fibre Broadband, with average downloads of 132Mbps. It's listed from £23.99 a month for 24 months, then £62 a month, with no landline and no data cap.

It suits couples and smaller households that mostly browse, stream in HD and make video calls.

Tip: Virgin lists M250 and M350 from £25.99 a month, just £2 more, so check whether the faster speed is worth it at your address.

3. Broadband and an O2 SIM with Volt

Virgin's terms list M250 broadband in its Volt bundle with an O2 SIM at £28.99 a month for 24 months, then £67. Volt boosts your broadband to the next speed up (to a maximum of 1Gbps) and doubles the data on eligible O2 Pay Monthly plans. It also includes the WiFi guarantee. Volt SIM plans start at £4 a month for 4GB, boosted from 2GB, on a 24-month term.

It suits households already with O2, or ready to move their mobiles there.

Tip: Your Virgin and O2 contracts and bills are separate, so check both minimum terms before you sign up.

4. Entertainment TV bundle from £32.99 a month

The Entertainment bundle combines 200+ channels and Netflix Standard with Ads with M350 broadband or faster. It's listed from £32.99 a month. Virgin's terms quote a standard price of £128 a month from month 25 for this bundle with M500 broadband.

It suits families who want live TV and Netflix on one bill.

Tip: A home phone with Anytime calls costs an extra £8 a month, so only add it if you'll use it.

5. Sport bundle with Sky Sports from £52.99 a month

The Sport bundle adds the Sky Sports HD collection, including live Premier League games, to Virgin TV, Netflix Standard with Ads and M350 broadband. It's listed from £52.99 a month for 24 months. The standard price from month 25 is currently £151 a month.

It suits sports fans who'd otherwise pay for Sky Sports separately.

Tip: Want films too? The Sport + Cinema bundle is listed from £62.99 a month. Work out whether you'd watch enough of both to justify the extra £10.

6. Flex TV with 10% credit back

Broadband and Flex TV is listed from £28.99 a month. You get a 24-month broadband contract and 150+ channels on a rolling 30-day TV contract. Add Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, TNT Sports or another subscription, and Virgin gives you 10% of its cost back as credit.

It suits people who switch subscriptions on and off depending on what's showing.

Tip: Flex can't be combined with Virgin's other TV services, so choose either Flex or a full TV bundle.

How to save more at Virgin Media

• Refer a friend: Virgin says you and a friend can each get up to £50 when they join.
• Use QuickStart: if you can self-install, you won't pay the £30 engineer fee.
• Students: with an ac.uk email address, you can get 12-month deals, with M125 from £26.99 a month.
• Social tariff: if you claim Universal Credit or certain other benefits, broadband-only deals start from £12.50 a month.
• Priority from O2: Virgin broadband customers get access to O2's rewards app at no extra cost.
