WiTopia is an American online privacy company based in Reston, Virginia. It started in 2003 as Full Mesh Networks, took the WiTopia name in 2005 and launched its personalVPN service the same year, so it has been around much longer than most VPN brands. It sells three things: personalVPN, SecureMyEmail email encryption, and CloakBox, a ready-made VPN router.

It suits people who use public Wi-Fi in cafés, stations and hotels, travellers who want to browse as if they were at home, and anyone who wants to stop their internet provider and websites tracking what they do online. SecureMyEmail is useful for sole traders, landlords and anyone who emails sensitive documents and doesn't want to switch to a new email address.

personalVPN runs on WiTopia's own FreeBSD-based servers and offers several protocols, including WireGuard and stealth modes meant to hide that you're using a VPN at all. It works on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. The 24-month plan is the cheapest way to buy it at $2.49 a month, billed $59.76 up front.

SecureMyEmail adds encryption to the address you already have, whether that's Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud or a work address. It's free forever for a single Gmail, Yahoo or Microsoft consumer address. For any other address there's a 30-day free trial with no card needed, then $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

The CloakBox routers are for whole households or small offices. Each one is an ASUS Wi-Fi 6 router that WiTopia configures for you, with a year or two of VPN service and support included, so smart TVs and games consoles go through the VPN too. Bear in mind they only ship free within the US.
