Athenassa is a small UK jewellery brand selling demi-fine pieces online: everyday necklaces, hoops, bracelets and rings made from recycled 925 sterling silver, either left silver or finished in 18ct gold or white gold vermeil. Many designs add a freshwater pearl, a scatter of zircon stones or a dot of coloured enamel. It sits between high-street fashion jewellery and fine jewellery, with most prices between about £75 and £175.

The story behind it is personal. Founder Hollie started the brand while pregnant with her second child, when she couldn't find a meaningful piece to mark the moment without paying designer prices. She sketched her own, and that first design became the mama necklace. The name joins her daughter's name, Athena, with anassa, the ancient Greek word for queen. It suits anyone buying a keepsake gift for a new mum, a birthday or a milestone, or treating themselves to something they'll wear every day.

The Script Mama Necklace at £88 is the brand's signature idea: "mama" written in flowing script on a fine recycled silver chain that sits at the collarbone. For something with more sparkle, the Moon & Star Hoops (£175) hang a tiny crescent moon and star set with zircon stones from gold vermeil hoops.

The Signature Gold T-Bar Hoops are the cheapest way in at £85: small 9mm hinged hoops with a T-bar detail that work every day. Pearl fans should look at the Halo Pearl Ring (£125), two loose gold bands joined by a single freshwater pearl. The site also groups pieces by theme, including heart, mama, zodiac and protection, and butterflies and animals, which helps if you're shopping for a gift.
