Active Silver is a small family business based at Sheeplands Farm near Wargrave in Berkshire. It was started by father and daughter Dick Goodall and Lucy Roberts, and everything is made by hand in small batches on site. The range is built around colloidal silver, which is tiny particles of silver held in purified water, and it includes the liquid itself, skincare, lip balms and a separate range for pets.

The company sells its products as cosmetics, says they are vegan and PETA certified as cruelty free, and packs most of its creams in violet Miron glass jars, which can go in with brown glass for recycling. It suits shoppers who like buying from small UK makers and want simple, refillable skincare for the whole household, pets included.

• Colloidal Silver, currently from £12 for a 50ml travel size, £14.50 for 100ml with a spray top and £33 for 500ml. Multi-bottle sets are available if you get through a lot.
• Magic Gel, currently from £6.50 for a 12ml pot, £12.50 for 30ml or £27 for 100ml. It is one of the shop's best sellers and comes in jars or a flip-top bottle.
• Glow Moisturiser, currently from £7.25 for a 12ml mini, £26 for 50ml or £36 for 100ml. The mini is a low-cost way to try it.
