GlobLinker: a SIM-free portable Wi-Fi hotspot for the UK and abroad

GlobLinker sells a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that doesn't need a SIM card. Instead, it uses what the company calls CloudSIM technology to find the strongest local mobile network wherever you are, then shares the connection with up to eight devices. It suits frequent travellers, people who work from cafés or trains, and households that want a backup connection when the broadband drops. The UK site prices in pounds and ships free.

It is worth knowing what you're buying from. The site doesn't name the company behind it or give a postal address, though its terms are governed by the law of England and Wales and it offers a 60-day return window, which gives you time to test it properly.

What's worth a look

• GlobLinker AI Cloudsim Portable WiFi Hotspot: currently £139 (prices can change), shown against a crossed-out £232. The pocket-sized device connects up to eight phones, laptops or tablets, and the company quotes up to 15 hours of battery life. It is the only hardware the shop sells, so this is the main purchase.
• Free data allowance: every device comes with 10GB of starter data and 2GB a month that the company describes as free for life, with unused data rolling over. For light use, such as maps, messages and email, that may be all you need, and you can run a laptop off it when public Wi-Fi is slow.
• Supported countries list: the hotspot works in the UK and, according to this page, more than 130 countries, including most of Europe, North America and much of Asia. Check your destinations here before you travel, as coverage depends on local networks.
• Prepaid data plans: if you need more than the free allowance, you can buy extra data through GlobLinker's customer portal, with separate plans for the USA, Europe, Australia and worldwide use. There's no contract or subscription. The product page quotes average costs in dollars: about $1.40 per GB for US data and $0.90 per GB for international data, with bigger packs costing less per GB.

Current offers

• The hotspot is currently listed at 40% off, with 10GB of preloaded data and 2GB of free data every month. This deal appears to run all the time rather than as a short-term sale.
• Shipping is free on every order, whatever the value.
• You can return the device within 60 days for a full refund, even if you've activated and used it, and return postage is free. Prepaid data can't be refunded.

How to save more

• Use up the free monthly allowance before buying a top-up. Because unused data rolls over, a few quiet months can build up a reserve for a holiday.
• If you do top up, pick a larger pack. The per-GB cost falls with pack size, so one bigger purchase usually beats several small ones.
• Test the hotspot at home, on your commute and anywhere else you rely on it during the first 60 days. If the signal isn't good enough, you can still send it back for a refund.
