MelodySusie makes manicure kit for people who do their own nails at home as well as for nail technicians. Its speciality is electric nail drills, from small rechargeable pens to clip-on and desktop models, and it also sells UV/LED lamps, dust collectors, drill bits, gel polish and cuticle care. It suits anyone moving from salon visits to doing gel or acrylic nails themselves, or a nail tech building up a portable kit.

The company lists an address in California and ships to the UK, with orders often sent from its factory in China. Switch the country selector to United Kingdom and prices show in pounds (excluding tax). UK delivery is quoted at 7 to 15 business days, plus a few days to prepare the order.

What's worth a look

For beginners, the Scarlet (SC320I) drill is the most affordable way into the drill range, starting at £39. If you'd rather avoid filing dust floating around the room, the SPro Nail Dust Collector uses a suction fan to pull filing dust away from your work area and is £66, while the Professional SPro version currently starts from £41 in the sale. The P-Plus20F lamp is a rechargeable model with what the brand calls a physical UV protection design, and it comes in several colours and bundle sets.

Smaller add-ons are good value too: the Cuticle Remover Kit bundles cream, oil, a nipper, file and brush, and is currently £11, and the 21-piece drill bit set in a metal holder is £13 if you already own a drill and want ceramic, diamond and carbide bits to try.

If you're choosing a lamp, the EOS 9 (P-Plus30I) is a plug-in 54W model with an auto sensor, three timer settings and a removable magnetic base, starting at £28. The rechargeable P-Plus20F costs more but saves you working near a socket, which is handy if you do nails on the sofa or take a kit to friends. The EOS 9's product page says it works with all gel types.
