MyHeritage: DNA kits, family trees and old photo tools for tracing your family

MyHeritage is a family history service that started in 2003 as a home startup run by its founder, Gilad Japhet, in Israel. It now combines online family trees, a large database of historical records, an at-home DNA test and tools for restoring old family photos. The UK site prices everything in pounds.

It suits anyone who has started asking where their family came from: people building a tree for the first time, those who already have one in another program and want to import it, and anyone with a shoebox of old photographs they'd like to bring back to life.

Once you've added a few names, dates and places, MyHeritage starts searching for you, sending Smart Matches with other people's trees and Record Matches from its historical collections, including census, birth, marriage and death records and newspapers. There are mobile apps for building your tree on the go, and the site is available in many languages, which helps if your family came to the UK from elsewhere.

What's worth a look

Six things from the MyHeritage site on 9 October 2026, from the DNA kit to the free tools.

The main draw on the day we checked was the MyHeritage DNA kit at £29, down from £79. It's a cheek swab you post back to the lab, with results online in three to four weeks: an ethnicity estimate across 2,114 regions and matches with relatives who have also tested. If you don't want to pay anything yet, the Family Tree Builder software is a free download, and you can build a tree on the website for free too.

The photo tools are a big part of the paid plans. Photo Enhancer sharpens blurry faces, In Color adds colour to black-and-white pictures, and Deep Nostalgia animates faces in still photos. Phone support in English runs Monday to Saturday afternoons and evenings UK time, and the help centre covers most account and kit questions.

How to save more

• If you're buying the DNA kit anyway, the bundle with the 30-day Complete trial costs the same £29 and includes free shipping, so it's the better buy as long as you remember to cancel if you don't want to continue.
• Use the free trial to search records and try the photo tools before you commit, and set a reminder a few days before it ends.
• Start with the free tree and Family Tree Builder; you can import a GEDCOM file from another program rather than retyping your research.
