Skylum is the company behind Luminar, a photo editor that leans on AI to do jobs like swapping a dull sky, smoothing skin or removing a stray bin with a single slider. It started in 2008 in Ukraine, founded by two photography fans who were also app developers, and now has a team of more than 100 people. Luminar suits keen amateurs who find Lightroom and Photoshop heavy going, and photographers who want quick fixes to sit alongside their existing tools.

The desktop app runs on Mac and Windows, on its own or as a plug-in for Photoshop, Lightroom and Apple Photos. Luminar Mobile covers iPhone, iPad, Android and ChromeOS. Prices on the UK site are in pounds, the main plans are one-time payments that let you keep the apps, and there's a 30-day money-back guarantee.

What's worth a look

Here's a mix of plans and learning material, with prices as shown on the site today.

On the pricing page, Max at £199 is the fullest plan: lifetime desktop and mobile apps plus a year of Luminar Prime, which unlocks the generative tools (GenErase, GenSwap, GenExpand), the asset library and new features released during the year. All Platforms is £159 and Desktop Only is £129 if you only edit on a computer. If you mostly shoot on a phone, Luminar Mobile Lifetime is showing at £39.99 instead of £79.98.

The marketplace is worth a browse even if you already own Luminar. It sells preset packs, LUTs, skies, textures and overlays, plus e-books and video courses from working photographers. The e-books are reasonably priced: the Art of Astrophotography guide by Jack Fusco is £12, and Christian Hoiberg's introduction to landscape photography is £15. The bigger plans also bundle a library of more than 2,150 presets and 50-plus courses for the year your Luminar Prime access runs.
