Sodastream turns tap water into sparkling water at home. The idea is older than most people think: the first machine was made in London in 1903 by Guy Hugh Gilbey of the Gilbey gin family, and Sodastream became a fixture of British kitchens in the 1970s and 80s. Today it is owned by PepsiCo, and the UK online shop sells machines, CO2 refills, bottles and flavours direct.

It suits households that get through a lot of bottled fizzy water or soft drinks and want fewer bottles to carry home and recycle. Most machines are sold as bundles, so the price you see usually includes at least one CO2 cylinder and a bottle, and the bigger bundles add extra gas and flavours.

Sodastream's own estimate is that one machine can replace over a thousand single-use plastic bottles over five years of average use. Beyond the machines, the shop sells the things you'll keep buying: CO2 refills, which work as an exchange so you only pay for the gas, plus spare bottles and syrups from Sodastream's own flavours to Pepsi MAX, 7UP Zero and MTN DEW drink mixes.

What's worth a look

Here are six picks, from machines to refills, with the UK prices and bundles shown today.

The ART Mint is the cheapest way in right now: its Limited Edition bundle is £74.99, down from £139.99, and it has a retro lever for setting the fizz. The Fresh Plus Starter Bundle is £89.99. If you want a button rather than a lever, the electric E-TERRA's Mega Bundle comes with three CO2 cylinders, three bottles and four flavours. Whichever you choose, the running cost is mostly gas: each cylinder makes up to 60 litres of sparkling water.

Current offers

  • ART and ART Mint Limited Edition bundles are £74.99 (was £139.99) in the sale.
  • Pepsi MAX, 7UP Zero, Diet Mirinda and Diet MTN DEW syrup 6-packs are £31.45, down from £41.94.
  • Fizz & Go Easy Mix bottles are £29.99, £5 off.
  • Join the newsletter for 10% off your next order (CO2 cylinders and exchanges excluded).
  • Free delivery on orders over £25.

How to save more

  • Put CO2 on a subscription. A one-off exchange is £25.98 a cylinder; Subscribe & Save brings it to £25. Ordering four cylinders at once also removes the £4.99 refill delivery charge.
  • Send your empties back on time. Returns are free with InPost, or you can hand empties to the DPD driver with Swap-It. Cylinders not returned within 90 days cost £10 each.
  • Compare bundle sizes. Each machine comes in Starter, Extra and Mega bundles. If you'll want spare gas and extra bottles anyway, a bigger bundle can cost less than buying them separately later.
