tado° is a Munich company that has been making smart heating controls since 2011, and it says more than 5 million of its thermostats are now installed in homes across Europe. Its products let you control heating room by room from a phone app, set schedules, and turn the heating down when everyone has gone out. The UK shop sells direct in pounds, with free shipping on orders over £150 and 30 days' free returns.

It suits homeowners and renters who want more control over their central heating without paying an engineer, since most kits are designed for DIY fitting. Radiator thermostats screw on in place of an existing valve head, and the wired thermostats use the same wiring as the room thermostat they replace. tado° says its products work with 95% of heating systems, and its online Product Finder will tell you which kit fits yours.

What's worth a look

Here are six products from the UK shop, with today's prices.

Most people start with the Smart Radiator Thermostat X Starter Kit at £139.99, which pairs one thermostat with the Bridge X that connects it to the internet. Extra rooms are then added one at a time with the single Smart Radiator Thermostat X, reduced to £59.99, or four at once with the Quattro Pack. The X thermostats have a rechargeable battery pack rather than disposable batteries, though the USB-C cable isn't included.

If you'd rather control the boiler from one wall thermostat, the Wired Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) Starter Kit replaces a wired room thermostat and also handles heat pumps and wet underfloor heating. The older V3+ range is now heavily reduced, but it isn't compatible with tado° X, so don't mix the two.

Current offers

We don't currently list any tado° codes, but the UK shop has plenty of reduced prices:

• The V3+ range is "now up to 68% off", with the Wireless Smart Thermostat Starter Kit V3+ with Hot Water Control at £89.99 (was £199.99).
• The Smart Radiator Thermostat X is £59.99 (was £79.99) and the Quattro Pack is £218.99 (was £259.99).
• The add-on Wired Smart Thermostat X is £79.99 (was £134.99), and the Smart AC Control is £69.99 (was £89.99).
• Shipping is free on orders over £150.

How to save more

• Plan the whole house before you order. A Starter Kit plus one extra radiator thermostat takes you over £150 for free shipping, and the Quattro Pack is cheaper than buying four single thermostats.
• Check what you already own. tado° says the radiator thermostats need a Bridge X or another compatible Thread border router, so if you already have one you may not need a starter kit.
• Buy from tado° or an authorised retailer. That gets you the two-year direct-service warranty, which tado° says isn't included with products bought from marketplace or secondhand sellers.
