YourSurprise is a gift shop built around one idea: put a name, a photo or a message on something and it becomes a present nobody else could have bought. The company started in 2005 with two friends in the Netherlands and now runs a UK site priced in pounds, with a UK phone number for customer service. It suits anyone who leaves birthdays to the last minute but still wants the gift to look thought about, and anyone buying for grandparents who already have everything.

The range is huge. You'll find photo books and albums, engraved leather wallets, personalised glasses, cushions, canvases, jewellery, socks, children's backpacks and puzzles. There's also a big food and drink section where well-known brands get your own wrapper or label, such as giant Milka and Twix bars, Haribo boxes and spirits gift sets. Orders are made to order and the site says they ship within one working day. Each one can include a free greeting card, and you can send it straight to the recipient without an invoice inside.

What's worth a look

Advent calendars are the seasonal pick right now. The personalised Kinder calendar holds 24 Kinder minis behind a box printed with your own photo or name, and it's down to £17.09. If you'd rather give something that lasts past December, the Luxury Jewellery Advent Calendar is £63.99 instead of £79.99. For a present that works any time of year, the engraved leather wallet is buffalo leather with laser engraving inside, at £27.99.

Current offers

YourSurprise has a Special Offers page listing around 20 reduced gifts. Today these include photo books at 20% off (now from £15.19 depending on size), the Luxury Jewellery Advent Calendar at 20% off, and 10% off several advent calendars and XXL chocolate bars. Sale prices come off automatically in the basket, so there's no code to enter. The page says the offers change weekly.

New customers can also get 10% off their first order by joining the newsletter on the discount code page. Only one code can be used per order.

How to save more

• Check the Special Offers page before you start designing, because a gift you've already personalised won't drop in price later.
• Look at the size and quantity options. Photo books start at £15.19 for the smallest size, and champagne flutes come as singles, pairs, fours or sixes, so you only pay for what you need.
• Use the free greeting card and send the gift direct to the recipient, which saves buying a card and paying postage twice.
