How we verify codesHow giving worksHow we make money
Alibris is an online marketplace for books, music and films, based in Emeryville, California. It was founded in 1997 by Martin Manley with the team behind Interloc, one of the first networks to put used booksellers' stock online, and its website launched in October 1998. Private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners bought it in 2006, and it was sold to a private investor in 2017; it remains privately owned.
Rather than holding its own stock, Alibris lists the inventories of a network of independent booksellers in dozens of countries, with hundreds of millions of titles between them. That makes it a good place to hunt for out-of-print editions, signed and collectable copies, textbooks and cheap second-hand reading copies, as well as new books. It also has a similar network for music on vinyl, cassette and CD, and films on DVD and VHS, and it supplies libraries and other retailers.
Most orders are sent by the individual bookseller straight to the customer, so delivery times and costs depend on where that seller is. UK shoppers can buy from sellers in Britain or abroad; check the seller's location before ordering, as books coming from the US can take longer and may cost more to post. Alibris has also run a UK version of its site at alibris.co.uk.
