PrimeCarers is a UK website for families who need a carer at home but want more say over who turns up. Instead of an agency allocating staff, you enter a postcode, browse profiles of local self-employed carers with their photos, experience, reviews and hourly rates, and choose the person you want to meet. It suits anyone arranging care for a parent or partner who values seeing the same friendly face, and people who would rather see the price before picking up the phone.

Every carer goes through identity and right-to-work checks, needs an accepted criminal-record check such as an Enhanced DBS certificate, and is interviewed before their profile goes live. You then agree the care directly with the carer, using PrimeCarers' written agreement, and pay by card through the platform after each visit has happened. PrimeCarers is clear that it is an introductory service rather than a CQC-registered care provider, so it's still worth checking a carer's training and documents fit your needs.

The pricing is unusually open. The pricing page lists typical rates with the platform fee already included: about £20 an hour for visits, from £130 for a sleeping night and from £1,050 a week for live-in care. There's no deposit or joining fee, and the site compares this with typical agency rates of £28 an hour or more.

What's worth a look

Six ways to arrange care through PrimeCarers, with the typical prices shown on its own pages.

Hourly care is the most flexible option, from an hour a week to daily visits for meals, errands and a routine, with carers typically charging £18 to £25 an hour. For more support, live-in care means a carer lives in the home full time, starting from £1,050 a week; the site sets this against care home fees.

If you're the main family carer, the respite care page is helpful: it costs the same as ongoing care with no premium for a one-off, and the site estimates an afternoon of cover at about £80 and a full day at about £160.

Current offers

We don't have any PrimeCarers codes at the moment, and care isn't something that goes on sale. What the site does offer is free searching with every carer's rate shown upfront, no deposit or joining fee, and payment only after care has taken place.

  • Carers usually advertise a lower hourly rate for visits of six hours or more; the site's live average was £18.44 an hour against £20.22 for shorter visits.
  • The optional managed service adds 5% for monthly reviews and scheduling help, or 10% for Fully Managed live-in care. Most families use neither.

How to save more

  • Agree extras in writing before care starts. Mileage is only charged when agreed in advance (usually 55p a mile), and outings or tickets are at cost.
  • Read the site's funding guides on Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance and council support before you commit, as you may be entitled to help with the cost.
  • Try the care cost calculator to compare a few visits a week with overnight or live-in cover before deciding.
