CharGrilled has been selling its own slogan and novelty designs online since 2005. It's a small, independent business, and everything is printed to order: you pick a design, then choose whether you want it on a men's or women's tee, a hoodie, a jumper, a vest, a kids' tee, an apron or a mug, and finally the colour and size. That makes it handy for gifts where you want a particular joke on a particular item, such as a matching mug and T-shirt, or the same design for a parent and child.

The catalogue is sorted into funny, retro and offensive sections. Some of the humour is aimed squarely at adults, so if you're buying for family it's worth sticking to the funny and retro pages, where there are plenty of gentler designs about pets, hobbies, films and places.

Gift vouchers are sold too, which helps if you're not sure of someone's size or sense of humour. CharGrilled also ships abroad for £9.95, though it says delivery outside the UK can take up to three weeks.

How to save more

• Choose the right delivery speed. Standard dispatch within five working days costs £2.95 by Royal Mail, two-day dispatch is £3.95, and next working day is £7.95 if you order before midday. Because items are printed to order, leave a few days before birthdays.
• Mugs and kids' tees are currently £14.95, a few pounds less than an adult tee, if you want the joke without the higher price.
• Check the size chart before you order. If something doesn't fit, unworn and unwashed items can be returned or exchanged within 30 days, but email the shop first with your order number.
