Charles Bentley: garden furniture, BBQs and brooms from a firm founded in 1860

Charles Bentley is a family business from Loughborough that has been going since 1860 and is now on its sixth generation. It began as a brush maker and still sells its own brooms, but the website now covers most of the garden and a fair bit of the house too: bistro sets and benches, BBQs and fire pits, sheds and water butts, kitchen bins, fireside sets and even cement mixers.

It suits anyone kitting out a patio or garden on a sensible budget, and people who want practical outdoor kit such as covers, parasol bases and storage boxes in one place. Larger items arrive on a pallet with kerbside delivery, so it helps to have a second pair of hands at home on the day.

What's worth a look

• Ottimo Pro 455 6-Burner Gas BBQ – the biggest gas BBQ on the homepage, currently £399.99 against a previous £479. Worth a look if you cook for a crowd and want several burners to play with.
• 3 Burner Gas BBQ in black – a smaller, simpler option, currently £139.99 (it was £179.99). A sensible size for a small patio or a family of four.
• Single Hanging Swing Chair – Natural – a hanging cocoon-style seat for a quiet corner, currently £249.99, down from £399.99.
• Snug Valencia Clay Chiminea – a traditional clay chiminea for keeping the patio usable into autumn, currently £62.99 (was £69.99).
• Bulldozer brooms – the firm's own heavy-duty yard brooms, a nod to where the business started. Prices vary by head size and bristle type.

Current offers

• Free standard delivery on all orders to most UK postcodes, usually within 3-5 working days. The Scottish Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland pay a surcharge.
• £15 off your first order over £150 when you sign up to the newsletter. The code arrives by email.
• Special prices on a range of BBQs, fire pits and garden furniture, with the old price shown on each product page.

How to save more

• Join the newsletter before a big order. The £15 code only works on a first order over £150, so it makes sense to use it on a BBQ or furniture set rather than a small accessory.
• Look at the Summer Clearance section. As the season turns, outdoor lines such as gazebos, parasols and garden furniture are often reduced to clear space.
• Buy covers at the same time as the item. BBQ and furniture covers are sold alongside, and getting them in the same order means one delivery rather than two.

Prices and offers can change, so check the product page before you buy. Klarna, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay are all offered at checkout if you'd rather not pay by card.
