gus + beau: stylish foam playmats that grow with your baby

gus + beau makes foam playmats for babies and toddlers that are designed to blend into a living room rather than shout across it. Founder Liz Rawlinson worked in online retail for brands including Liberty and notonthehighstreet.com, and started the business on maternity leave after struggling to find a playmat she liked for her son Gus. It suits parents who want a soft, wipe-clean space for tummy time and crawling in muted rainbows, stars, spots or plain colours that match the rest of the room.

The mats are interlocking 60cm tiles of EVA foam that the brand says are BPA, lead and phthalate-free and EU safety-certified. Sets start at six tiles (120 x 180cm), and you can add extra tiles or trim them to fit an awkward corner.

What's worth a look

Here are some of the sets and extras on the site today. Prices are for the smallest six-tile size unless stated.

The Rainbow Playmat Set in Cream is the bestseller, at £75 for six tiles and up to £450 for a 36-tile, 3.6m-square mat. If you'd rather choose your own colours, the plain sets start at £60, and the Plain Playmat Bundle - 9 tiles (£88.50) lets you mix any of 13 shades into a 180cm square. Plain and patterned tiles are made by different suppliers and don't lock together, so decide on one style before you buy.

The mats wipe clean with a damp cloth, and the FAQ is useful on the practical side. Plain mats can go on underfloor heating as long as you leave a gap at the edges for expansion, but the patterned ones shouldn't. Heavy furniture shouldn't sit on any of them. Orders to Ireland are charged in euros and cost £5 to deliver.

Current offers

We don't have any gus + beau codes in our list right now, but the site is running these:

• A free Large Bumbag in Cream (usually £20) when you spend £75 or more, while stocks last.
• Outlet sets at 30% off, including the Confetti Playmat Set in Mint and the Rainbow Playmat Set in Beige from £52.50.

How to save more

• Look in the outlet first. The patterned sets there cost less than full-price plain sets.
• A £75 six-tile patterned set is enough on its own to get the free bumbag and free delivery.
• Start small. You can buy extra single tiles later as your baby starts crawling further, so you don't need to pay for the biggest size up front.
