Insurance2go has been selling phone and gadget insurance online since 2007. It's a trading name of Loyal Insurance Services Ltd, part of the Portsmouth-based SPB UK & Ireland group, and its sister company Citymain Administrators runs the policies and handles claims. The site says its personal gadget policies are underwritten by Collinson, and the companies behind the brand are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

It suits anyone whose phone or laptop would be expensive to replace, families with a drawer full of devices, and small businesses kitting out staff. You can insure phones, tablets, laptops, games consoles, smartwatches, headphones and cameras bought in the UK, new or refurbished, within the last 36 months and with a 12-month warranty. Cover follows you abroad for up to 90 days a year, and there's no limit on the number of claims, up to £2,000 per claim.

Phone cover comes in two levels. Essential, from £1.99 a month, covers accidental damage, liquid damage and breakdown after the warranty runs out. Full cover, from £3.49 a month, adds loss, theft and up to £1,000 of unauthorised calls and data in the first 24 hours. If you have a phone, tablet and laptop to protect, the multi-gadget policy puts 3 or 5 devices on one policy, with up to £250 of accessory cover.

The single-gadget policies follow the same pattern for tablets, laptops, consoles and smartwatches. Accessories lost or damaged at the same time as the device are covered up to £150 (£250 for games consoles and multi-gadget policies), and if a replacement doesn't fit your old charger or case, the policy pays towards new ones. Cover starts as soon as you buy, and your immediate family living at the same address are covered when they use the device, which is handy for a child's tablet or a shared laptop. You need to be 18 or over to take out a policy, and you have to live in the UK.

• Discount codes can be used on single-gadget policies only, one per policy, and the discount lasts 12 months.

How to save more

• Work out whether you need loss and theft cover. If your phone rarely leaves the house, Essential costs less than Full.
• Check your home insurance first: some policies already cover gadgets at home, though often not when you're out.
• Choose your excess carefully. A higher excess lowers the premium, and claims in the first 31 days carry an extra early excess.
