Mystery Box Shop: surprise gift boxes for birthdays and beyond

Mystery Box Shop is a good fit if you're stuck for a present and like a bit of theatre at the opening. You pick a theme and a price, and the team fills a box from its stock. The business says it started with a shop in Birmingham in 2013 and now runs from a large warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent, sending boxes across the UK and Northern Ireland.

Its main promise is that the RRP of the items inside adds up to more than you paid. Boxes never contain food or alcohol. According to the shop, the brands it stocks range from Yankee Candle and Stanley to Marvel and Peppa Pig.

What's worth a look

• Gift Boxes for Women: the shop's most popular theme, with a pampering slant. It comes in values of £14.99, £29.99, £49.99 and £99.99 (prices can change).
• Gadget Mystery Box: tech bits and gizmos, currently £29.99 or £49.99.
• Gift Box for Teenage Boys: a handy one for a hard-to-buy-for age group, currently £29.99 or £49.99.
• Gifts for Gardeners: garden-themed items for anyone with green fingers, currently £29.99 or £49.99.
• Gifts for Pets: a box for the dog in the family, so they don't miss out on the fun.

There are also boxes for junior and teenage girls, housewarmings, glassware, stationery, sci-fi and fantasy fans, and couples. If you'd rather know what you're giving, there's a women's gift box that isn't a mystery.

Boxes are packed to fit through a letterbox where possible, so the person receiving one doesn't need to be in. You can also send a box straight to the recipient's address and add a message at checkout. The shop says its boxes suit all ages, and it says its boxes are popular at children's birthday parties. Businesses also use the boxes to reward staff, and there's a separate office and corporate page for larger orders.

Current offers

• The site header shows a "Get 10% Off" link. The conditions aren't spelled out on the page, so check them before you order.

We haven't seen any other public offers on the site right now. Delivery is a flat £4.99 to anywhere in the UK and Northern Ireland.

How to save more

• If you're buying for a younger child or just want a small token, the £14.99 women's box is the cheapest way in. Most other themes start at £29.99.
• Gift wrapping costs £4.99 and a personal message £1.50. Skip both if you'll be handing the box over yourself.
• If you order two boxes at the same time, contents can overlap. For two siblings, pick different themes.

One thing to know before buying: because the contents are a surprise, you can't return a box just because you don't like what's inside. Unopened items can still be sent back within 14 days, at your own postage cost.
