Original Penguin started in 1955 as a golf shirt made by Munsingwear, an American underwear and sportswear company, with a small embroidered penguin on the chest. The brand's own story says the bird, known as Pete, came from a stuffed penguin a salesman picked up on his travels. Perry Ellis International bought the label in 1996, and Pete is still on almost everything it sells. It suits anyone who likes smart-casual clothes with a bit of fun in them, and golfers who want something less stiff than the usual club-shop polo.
Polos remain the core, but the UK site also sells T-shirts, shirts, knitwear, sweatshirts, jackets, jeans and trousers, plus trainers, sandals and sunglasses. The golf section covers men's polos, layers and trousers and a women's range of polos, skorts and dresses. If you prefer shopping in person, there are Original Penguin outlet shops at Cheshire Oaks, Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, York, Livingston, Swindon and Clarks Village.

The sale is the easiest place to start. The Textured Stripe Tipped Polo Shirt in Dark Sapphire is £35, down from £70, and the Gaz Trainer in black is £45, down from £75. For full-price autumn pieces, the Lambswool Crew Neck Sweater in Dusty Olive is £80 and the Insulated Aviator Jacket in True Black is £140.
If you only buy one thing, make it a polo. The Sticker Pete Tipped Long Sleeve Polo Shirt at £60 carries the penguin as a patch rather than the usual small embroidery, and the long sleeves make it more useful than a short-sleeved polo once the weather turns. The new Straight Fit Jeans at £75 are a plain, light-wash pair that will go with most of the range.
