Philips Hue: smart bulbs, light strips and TV sync from the official shop

Philips Hue was one of the first smart bulb systems you could buy when it launched in 2012, and it's now a whole family of app-controlled lights. It's made by Signify, the former Philips Lighting business, and the official UK Hue Shop sells everything in the range, including some products you can't get elsewhere.

It suits anyone who wants lights that change colour or brightness from a phone, follow a schedule, react to motion sensors or sync with a TV or games console. Newcomers can start with a single starter kit; people who already have Hue can add outdoor lights, light strips, lamps, switches and security cameras that all work in the same Hue app. UK delivery is free over £50, returns are free within 30 days and products have a two-year warranty.

The new Play screen sync is the cheaper way into TV lighting at £89.99: a camera mounted on your TV reads the colours on screen and mirrors them on your Hue lights. If you're starting from scratch, the Essential starter kit with three E27 colour bulbs is £114.99.

For more of a statement, the Signe gradient floor lamp in oak (£319.99) is a slim pole that blends several colours to paint the wall behind it with a gradient of light. With Christmas coming, the 20-metre Festavia string lights (£199.99) bring the same app control to a tree or the garden.
