Ruffians opened its first barbershop in Edinburgh's West End in 2012 and now also has shops in Covent Garden, Marylebone and Shoreditch in London. It says it has won 'British Barbershop of the Year' three times. Alongside haircuts, it makes its own range of styling and grooming products, which its barbers use in the chair and which you can buy online. It suits men who want salon-quality styling products without hunting through dozens of brands, and it's a handy source of gifts.

The range is small and focused: clays, pomades and creams for styling, sprays for texture and volume, and a set of beard products. The beard and hair products share a citrus, cedar and pine scent, so they work well together.

What's worth a look

For easy texture, the Beach Salt Spray at £18 uses Cornish sea salt and kelp for a matte, lived-in finish. If you prefer a sleek, shiny look, the water-based Hybrid Pomade, also £18, works for pompadours and mid-length styles. Beard wearers should look at the Beard & Hair Oil at £24, which blends sea buckthorn, blackcurrant seed, jojoba and macadamia oils.

The Thickening Spray, also £18, is meant for anyone wanting fuller-looking hair before blow-drying. The Beard + Hair Shampoo comes in a generous 500ml bottle for £36 and uses kelp and prebiotics to stop hair and beard drying out. The Original Conditioner is the bargain of the range right now at £6. Ruffians also makes Matt Clay, Hair Cream, Beach Fix, Smoothing Balm and Beard Balm, most at £18 for a 50g pot. If you're near Edinburgh or central London, you can book a cut at one of the four barbershops through the site and pick up products while you're there.
