Scribbler has been making people laugh with greetings cards since 1981, when John and Jennie Procter opened their first shop. It now has 38 shops around the UK and a website with thousands of designs by its in-house team and hundreds of independent artists. Cards cover every occasion: birthdays by age and recipient, anniversaries, weddings, new babies, new jobs, exams, leaving dos, get well and sympathy.

Humour is the house style. Some of it is gentle, and some of it is very much for grown-ups, so if you're buying for a grandparent or a child, browse by style and choose from the cute, floral, traditional or pun ranges. Everyday own-brand cards are printed in the UK on paper from responsibly managed forests, and they come without cellophane.

It's also a handy gift shop. Scribbler stocks Jellycat soft toys, Smiski collectables, Tony's Chocolonely, letterbox cookies and brownies from Baked By Steph and Simply Cake Co, 2027 diaries, games, socks and wrapping paper, with a Gifts by Price filter that includes an under £10 section.

Right now the shelves are full of Halloween: Jellycat's spooky Amuseables, iced letterbox cookies, brownie slabs and macarons. Christmas cards and gifts follow soon after, and the 2027 diaries are already in, so it's a good time to sort a few presents and stock up on cards for the months ahead.

What's worth a look

A card for the birthday list, plus a few gifts and treats from the current range:

Standard cards are £3.99, like the Excited By Fresh Pyjamas Birthday Card for anyone who loves an early night. For Halloween, the Jellycat Ghost Bob is £23, and The Traitors Card Game at £12.99 is a good one for family get-togethers.

Current offers

• Buy 3 get 1 free on all cards: the offer runs across the whole card range, online and shown on the homepage banner.
• Free card for new rewards members: join Scribbler Rewards and you get bonus points worth a free card. They expire after 60 days, so use them on your next order.

How to save more

• Buy cards in fours. If you've got a few birthdays coming up, write a list and take advantage of buy 3 get 1 free in one go.
• Check the delivery charge. Cards go by Royal Mail from £1.90 per address, while gift orders are £3.99, so it can be cheaper to send a card on its own and give the gift in person.
• Send it direct. Choose a send-on date and Scribbler posts the card to the recipient, which saves on a stamp and a trip to the post box.
