Scribendi is an online proofreading and editing company that has been running since 1997, based in Chatham, Ontario, and owned since 2023 by Edanz, a Japanese author services firm. You send it a document, choose how quickly you need it back, and one of its editors returns an edited copy with comments on anything that still needs attention. It says it works with more than 400 native English editors, many with master's degrees or PhDs, and they work to APA, Chicago, Harvard and other style guides.

It suits university students with an essay or dissertation to polish, researchers getting a paper ready for a journal, novelists preparing a manuscript for agents, and small businesses that want reports or web copy checked. There are versions of most services for people writing in English as a second language. The quote tool can show prices in British pounds, so you know exactly what you'll pay before you order.

What's worth a look

Scribendi prices by word count and turnaround, so these six services don't have fixed prices: upload your file for an instant quote.

For students, Essay Proofreading fixes typos, grammar and spelling and adds suggestions on clarity, and it's one of the services the student discount covers. Postgraduates can step up to Dissertation Editing, which also checks your document against your university's guidelines.

Writers have more options. Book Editing covers anything from copy editing to polish your prose to developmental notes on plot and characters, while a Book Critique gives an honest read of plot, characters and dialogue (or structure and clarity for non-fiction) before you spend money on a full edit. Turnaround is your choice: Academic Proofreading, for example, runs from 2 hours for up to 1,000 words to a week for up to 65,000.

Current offers

Our Scribendi page has codes from the affiliate feed for students, businesses, authors and academic and scientific writing. On Scribendi's own site:

• The Student Discount page gives 10% off Student Essay and Admission Essay editing and proofreading to anyone at college, university or high school.
• Many services offer a free sample edit, so you can see an editor's work before you pay.
• The quote tool lowers the price automatically for longer turnarounds, large documents and weekday orders.

How to save more

• Leave time if you can. Choosing 48 hours instead of 24, or a week instead of 72 hours, brings the price down without changing the service.
• Upload your file rather than guessing the word count, and leave out anything you don't need checked, such as appendices. Supporting files are free to attach but aren't edited.
• Sign up to the newsletter: Scribendi says it occasionally sends discount codes that way.
