Sinocare: glucose meters, test strips and blood pressure monitors

Sinocare is a Chinese medical device maker, founded in Changsha in 2002, that specialises in home blood glucose monitoring. Its English-language online shop sells meters, test strips, lancets, uric acid meters and blood pressure monitors in pounds, with UK orders sent from a local warehouse. It suits people who already test at home and want to keep a steady supply of strips without paying high-street prices, and carers looking after someone who monitors regularly. If you're new to home testing, follow the advice of your GP or diabetes team on whether you need a meter and how often to use it.

What's worth a look

• Safe AQ Air Bluetooth Blood Sugar Monitor: currently from £16 (prices can change). This is Sinocare's newest meter. It gives a reading in about five seconds from a small sample and syncs results over Bluetooth to the free Medm Health app, so you can look back at your history on your phone. Kits come with 25 or 50 strips and lancets, and there are refill-only options too.
• Safe AQ Smart Blood Sugar Monitor: currently from £15. A no-coding meter that comes as a kit with a lancing device with nine depth settings, strips, lancets and a carry case. It suits anyone who wants a simple, portable meter without an app. It stores your recent readings on the device.
• 200-piece test strips with free lancets: currently from £33, down from £39. Strips are where the ongoing cost sits, and the 200 packs work out cheaper per strip than the 50-piece packs (from £15). Pick the version that matches your meter, because each Sinocare meter needs its own strips.
• ARM-30E+ Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor: currently £20. An upper-arm monitor with two user modes that each store 99 readings, an irregular heartbeat icon and a long cuff. It comes in white or black.
• BA-816 Automatic Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor: currently £96. A step up from the ARM-30E+, with voice guidance that reads out results, a colour-coded backlight and a cuff that fits arms up to 42cm. It could suit someone who finds small screens hard to read.

How to save more

• Buy strips in larger packs once you know how many you use. Strips have expiry dates, though, so don't stock up beyond what you'll get through.
• Check your meter's model name before ordering strips. The shop lists strips by meter, and the wrong ones won't work.
• Choose a kit that bundles the meter with strips and lancets rather than buying them separately.

Customer service is by email at [email protected] and works to Chinese business hours, so expect a reply the next working day. Details are on the contact page.
