Travelodge is a budget hotel chain with more than 600 hotels across the UK, plus some in Ireland and Spain. It suits city breakers, families on a budget, business travellers and anyone who needs a cheap bed near an airport, stadium or attraction. The rooms are simple, with the signature king-size Travelodge Dreamer bed, and many hotels have a Bar Café serving breakfast and dinner.

What's worth a look

• Rooms for £35 or less: Travelodge's deals page explains how to find rooms at this price for autumn. It's ideal for weekday trips, as the cheapest dates are usually away from weekends and big events.
• October's Deal Drop: a monthly batch of limited-time deals. Featured destinations include London, Edinburgh, York, Bath and Cardiff. The terms shown on the page say the offer is Monday to Friday only and can't be combined with other promotions.
• York hotels: a good autumn city break, with several Travelodge hotels in and around the city.
• Bar Café menu deals: the new comfort-food menu includes Mushroom Bourguignon Pie, Truffle Chips and Baked Cookie Dough. The meal deal pairs selected mains with a side or dessert from £14.99.
• Best Price Finder: search by city, town or postcode and it shows the cheapest dates, which suits anyone whose dates are flexible.

Room prices change with demand, so the same hotel can cost very different amounts on different nights.

If you want a bit more space, Travelodge has been rolling out SuperRooms and next-generation rooms at some hotels, and you can now choose your room before arrival at over 600 hotels (charges apply). The Travelodge app lets you search, book and manage stays on the go, and there's a Business account for people who travel for work.

How to save more

• Sign up for Travelodge emails so you hear when each month's Deal Drop lands. The page says sign-ups also get promos, competitions and birthday treats.
• Travelling as a family? Add breakfast for the adults to unlock the £1 kids' breakfast. It's often cheaper than finding a café nearby.
• Weigh up the rates. A cheaper non-flexible rate is fine for fixed plans, but the Flexible rate's free cancellation until noon on arrival day can save money if your plans might change.
