BookBeat is an audiobook and e-book streaming service, set up in 2015 by the Swedish publishing group Bonnier. It is based in Stockholm, operates in more than ten European markets including the UK, and says it has over 1.1 million paying users.
Instead of credits, BookBeat charges by the number of hours you listen or read each month. The UK plans are Basic (20 hours for £7.99 a month), Standard (40 hours for £12.99) and Premium (100 hours for £19.99), all with access to the same library of over a million books, including new releases, thrillers, romance, children's books and biographies. You can switch plans or cancel at any time, and books can be downloaded to listen offline in the iOS and Android apps.
A family account lets up to four extra people in the same household have their own profile and hours, for £4.99 to £9.99 a month each depending on the plan. Digital gift cards are sold for each plan and can be bought without an account. New users get a free trial before the paid subscription starts.
