RentalCover.com sells protection for hire cars that you buy online before you pick up the keys, instead of the excess waiver the rental desk offers. It started in Sydney in 2014, opened its first overseas office in London, and is operated by the insurtech Cover Genius. In the UK, RentalCover.com is a trading style of Cover Genius Ltd, registered in England and Wales (company 09408621) and authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 750711).
For most renters it works as car hire excess cover. If the hire car is damaged or stolen, the rental company charges your card up to the excess and you claim that back from RentalCover. It also aims to cover things rental desk waivers often leave out, such as windscreens, tyres, underbody damage, lost keys and lockouts, towing, and fees like loss of use. Typical exclusions include misfuelling, interior damage, motorbikes, supercars and some vehicle types and destinations, and your policy wording has the full detail. RentalCover is the agent, and each quote names the insurer behind your cover. The site names insurers including AmTrust, Intact, Nationwide, Atlas, Collinson, US Fire and Asservo.
You can cancel before pick-up, and you can change cover dates or make a claim from your online account. The site's UK guide puts the average cost at about £10 a day. There are 30% discounts for students, seniors and military personnel (not for US or Canadian residents), and RentalCover will try to beat a cheaper like-for-like quote.
