French Furniture Fittings: handles and knobs from a Wiltshire family firm

French Furniture Fittings is a small family business in Market Lavington, near Devizes, that only sells cabinet hardware: kitchen cupboard handles, cup handles, metal and ceramic knobs and a few coat hooks. It began by selling hand-made French handles, which explains the name, and now also stocks British makers such as Crofts & Assinder alongside its own designs. If you're refreshing a kitchen without replacing the doors, upcycling a chest of drawers or fitting out a new wardrobe, this is a shop worth a look.

The range is grouped into collections, so a handle, a matching knob and a cup handle share the same details and finish. You can also browse by finish, which helps if you've found one piece you love and want everything else to match, from matt black and polished chrome to deep antique brass, antique pewter, copper and old iron effect. Prices are per piece, and most handles cost between about £4 and £10 depending on size and finish.

The Art Deco Kitchen Cabinet Handles start at £7.00 and come in three lengths, 128mm, 192mm and 288mm, in finishes including polished chrome, brushed satin nickel and two antique brasses. For a softer, more traditional look, the Brittany handles from £6.40 come in antique pewter as well as brass.

For a bit of fun on a dresser or child's chest of drawers, the hand-beaten MKN knobs are the shop's quirkiest line. The Fish Knob from £4.20 is panel-beaten metal stained turquoise. The shop is upfront that these knobs are hollow and light because of the way they're made, so don't expect solid weight in the hand.

How to save more

• Buy a sample or two first. The shop recommends it, and because you pay return postage on unwanted items, a wrong guess across a whole kitchen costs far more than a sample does.
• Plan the whole room in one order. Twenty handles at £6 to £8 each will usually take you past £80 and get free next-day delivery.
• Read the measuring guide before ordering. Handle sizes are given as hole centres, so measure the gap between your existing screw holes if you're reusing them.
