Homestyler is 3D home design software that runs in your web browser, with a companion app for phones and tablets. You start with a floor plan, either drawn from scratch, uploaded as an image or DWG file, or captured with the room scan feature, and Homestyler turns it into an editable 3D model. From there you drag in furniture, change floors and wall colours, and render photo-style images or walkthroughs of the finished room.

It started life at Autodesk, which launched Homestyler in 2010. The business was later bought by Easyhome, and Alibaba Group invested in it in 2019. It suits homeowners planning a renovation or extension, people moving house who want to check furniture fits, and design students who want to practise. Prices are shown in US dollars, so UK buyers pay in dollars at checkout.

Most people should start with the free floor planner on the Basic plan, which includes unlimited 1K renders, over 100,000 free models and basic roof editing. You only need to pay if you want sharper images: Pro+ starts from $6.8 a month and adds 75 renders a month at both 2K and 4K, watermark removal, multi-floor plans and 180 AI credits.

If you're mostly after nicer furniture rather than better renders, the Styler membership (from $3.9 a month) unlocks premium models and template designs. AI Boost (from $4.9 a month) is aimed at people who use the AI tools a lot, such as AI Planner and AI Stager, and includes a monthly allowance of AI credits.

Master+ (from $11.8 a month) adds unlimited 4K image rendering and more video and panorama quota. It's really meant for working designers, as is the Team plan with shared libraries. For a one-off kitchen or loft project, the free plan or a month of Pro+ is usually plenty.

How to save more

• Use the free plan until you hit a limit you actually care about. Many home projects need no more than 1K renders.
• Coins from challenges and bootcamps can pay for one-off 2K or 4K renders, which may be cheaper than a monthly plan if you only need a few.
• Paid plans are charged in dollars, so use a card with no foreign transaction fees, and check whether a plan auto-renews before you subscribe.
