Venchi is an Italian chocolate maker with a history going back to 1878, when Silviano Venchi started experimenting in a small workshop in Turin. Its Nougatine, caramelised hazelnuts in dark chocolate, was created in 1922 and is still made to the same recipe. The UK website sells the full range in pounds, from five-piece bags of chocolates for under £10 to large gift hampers, so it suits anyone after a proper treat for themselves or a gift that looks the part.

The house speciality is Chocoviar: chocolates rolled in tiny crunchy chocolate pearls, which Venchi launched in 2004. You'll also find Cremino layered chocolates, bars in extra-dark, gianduia, pistachio and milk, spreads, hot chocolate and even chocolate cigars, with separate sections for no-added-sugar, vegan and gluten-free choices. Right now the Christmas range is in, with vintage-style tins, hampers and advent calendars.

Venchi opened in London in 2012 and says it now has more than 200 of its own shops in over 70 countries, where it serves fresh gelato alongside the chocolate. Online orders to the UK are shipped duty paid, so there are no extra charges on the doorstep, and orders placed before 2pm from Monday to Thursday usually arrive within one or two working days.

If you've never tried Chocoviar, the Chocoviar Pistachio 5 pcs at £9 is an easy start: a pistachio and hazelnut heart with toasted pistachios and toffee crumble. The new Chocoviar Mango is £7 and pairs a mango centre with milk and white chocolate.

For Christmas, the Vintage Dream advent calendar costs £18 and holds 24 Granblend chocolates, while the gift box with Chocoviar and Ingots at £34 mixes eight Chocoviar flavours with hazelnut and pistachio bars.
